Personality
Nikolai is a very straightforward and blunt guy, which makes him appear rude and dead-serious to basically everyone. Not only does he appear serous, he is indeed very serious and thinks his work is more important than anything, so fooling around is something he wouldn't even know how to do. He is a rather melancholic guy, often lost in his thoughts and usually more on the quiet side, yet outgoing around those he knows well.
He is confident and cannot really accept critisicm in any form, even a little comment can put him off and make him pissed off for the rest of the whole day. 

It's complicated to get along with him. If someone bores him or the person does not seem personable, he cuts off conversations by just leaving without a word.
Nikolai does not care what others might think about him and is apathethic, which is why he does not have many friends. He's also oblivious, so he doesn't even notice if he hurts other peoples' feelings, which makes him often question why he is so lonely even though the answer is obvious. His expression usually wears a frown and he does rarely smile.

He judges people by their looks and easily has an opinion about others, which is usually not really nice. Nikolai has trust issues, it's very hard for him to make up contact to a person he consider might be nice. Basically he's putting stones into his own way and doesn't notice it, so he often ends up being quite sad as he doesn't understand why so few people only like him.
His expression might remain as indifferent as usual, but Nikolai is excited easily and loves having rushes of adrenaline, especially in expeditions. He thinks those make his life not as boring as it would be without them, so he's always looking forward them, even though he knows how dangerous they are.
Overall he is a lonely person and antisocial, hating to be around too many people at once.

Background
Nikolai was born into a rather wealthy family consisting of an older sister, mother and father in Trost. His mother was a soldier in the Scouting Legion, and his father worked as a blacksmith. Since his childhood, Nikolai was the quiet one while his sister was loud and quirky. His sister, Anastasia, became a soldier, and graduated to become a member of the Garrison Regiment. Nikolai looked up at her, and ever since wanted to also join the military to become a soldier just like his role model.
One day, his mother did not return from an expedition. Nikolai always had known the risk that she would die outside the walls was high, yet it was quite a shock anyway. Her death brought him to the melancholic state he's usually in nowadays. The death of his mother did not only change Nikolai, it also changed his father. Nikolai's father used to be a cheerful, happy man, yet the death of his wife threw him off so much that he started to drink daily. He stopped going to work, and always sat in the same place in the house they lived in. He did not get abusive or agressive in any way. He simply drowned his sadness in alcohol, up to that point that he died someday. Luckily, Nikolai's sister earned enough money thanks to her being as a soldier, and Nikolai was able to keep living. He despises alcohol ever since then. 
When his father passed away, he was only ten years old, too young to be alone the whole day as Anastasia used to be outside the whole day. So he lived with his grandparents. His grandfather used to be a soldier in the Scouting Legion, and would tell him every day, before Nikolai went to bed, stories about all the expeditions he did, what he saw outside the walls, everything. These stories made Nikolai also want to see all of that, and so, two years later when he was twelve, he enlisted in the military to graduate later as 2nd best in his Corps. He did join the Scouting Legion then, and has been on various expeditions ever since.
